Kardelen Ozel - Classroom Observation Notes

Class: 6B
Teacher: Hande Özkan
Hour: 2
Materials used in lesson: Hand- outs, Smartboard
Subject: Present Perfect Tense

Teacher brought hand-outs about aux verbs and asked students to cut the paper and stick it to their notebooks.
-Teacher brought extra scissors and glue for students who forgot to bring their own materials.
-Teacher gave short and clear instructions and used simplified language throughout the lesson.

It took at least 15 mins for students to complete cutting the paper and I think that 15 min could have been used more effectively. If I were in her place, I would ask students to do it at home not to waste 15 mins. Teacher asked students to complete an activity about aux verbs and gave them 10 mins for 24 blanks and then they checked the correct answers all together on the smartboard. There were no time for the last 6 questions...

- Teacher answers students' questions right away and I realized that she often uses positive sentences.

Instead of saying ''Why don't you listen Sena?'' she says ''We are listening to the teacher carefully, right Sena?''. I like the fact that she uses positive sentences, it is a lot effective in the class.

Class: 7A
Number of Students: 15
Teacher: Erdi Bugay
Subject: Few, A few, Much, Many
Hour: 1

He started the lesson by checking homework, I think too many minutes are wasted to check students' homework. While checking a student's book, he yelled at one student and asked him to stop drawing shapes on his notebook!
I really do not understand WHY DID HE CARE? He did not give other students a task to keep them busy so it was normal that they were busy with drawing funny faces on their notebooks.

- He always asks students to speak English however students cannot explain what they want to say in English so they keep speaking Turkish.
-He showed the correct answers to students on the smartboard and asked them to check the answers and he basically played with his phone while the students are checking the correct answers.

-The teacher uses so many unfinished sentences while talking and I think it is very annoying for students.
Ex: ''Last time we did,I wrote many, Lets continue with ......''

-Teacher wrote at least 13 sentences to show the difference between a few and few however students did not understand the difference because all of the sentences that was written on the board were from different context. If I were in his place, I would write similar 2 sentences to show the difference between few and a few.

Class: 5B
Teacher: Esin Özertuğrul
Hour: 1
I was told that there was an Spanish exam in 5B and all the other classes so I could not make any observation.
